Opportunity Snapshot

This newly created position offers you the opportunity to make a strategic impact at a prominent non-profit organization, helping us help the community. This part-time (20 hours per week) role is ideal for a seasoned HR veteran who has other interests (semi-retirement or starting an online business, for example) but wants to keep their hand in the HR game. You'll interact with people throughout our organization and provide the full range of HR support for multiple programs with diverse needs. There will be no such thing as a "typical day," given the variety of clients you'll support -- about 120 people total. As one of three Directors, you will contribute to strategic planning.

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant and broad HR experience and knowledge, including employment law, compensation, organizational planning and development, employee relations, safety, training and development, and more. We're looking for a professional with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse employees at all levels of the organization.

While we are not at liberty to disclose our name until you have been fully qualified, we are a well-established, high profile organization serving the community with a number of respected and effective programs. The atmosphere is busy and high energy, but it is also positive and supportive -- and you'll help ensure that.

What You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the requirements outlined above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in HR, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven success at serving as a participant on executive management teams that provide company leadership and direction.
  • A demonstrated ability to interact effectively with the organization's leadership.
  • Solid coaching abilities.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office.
  • Experience with unions is a plus.

What's in It for You

Part time role, full time impact -- while this is a part time position, you will provide input as we re-define mission and goals and develop a ten-year master plan. You will be able to see the tangible results of your contributions in short order as well as over the long term.

Work/life balance -- we are open to setting up a schedule that works well for you as well as the organization.

A tradition of success in the mission -- the breadth and depth of our programs is a testament to our effectiveness as an active community force, and our program leaders are highly regarded in their fields. On the administrative side, we have significant cash resources, we ran with a surplus last year, and we're on track to do it again this year.

Extensive and diverse programs -- you'll flex all your HR "muscles" in this role, as we have programs serving a variety of clients, providing food, counseling, care, music programs, and many more.

More About Your Role

You will report to one of our senior leaders and coordinate activities with the Human Resources Committee. You will not only consolidate HR functions that up until now were divided among different positions, but also bring a new level of strategic leadership to the function. It is likely that, as we finalize our organization chart, you will have administrative support in certain areas, and you may utilize external resources as well.

In addition to supporting the various programs, you'll drive some organization-wide projects. For example, one of your first objectives will be to consolidate and update our employee manual, which will provide you a solid overview of the organization from the start. You also will help take our record-keeping policies and procedures to the next level, both to provide valuable information for management decision making and to ensure regulatory compliance. As part of this you will take over our current initiative to update all employee records and files, including transitioning more and more records from hard copy to electronic files.

Your specific activities will include:
  • Recruiting and staffing open positions, including writing job descriptions, conducting initial screening of applicants, and performing background checks.
  • Delivering employee orientation, development, and training (including sexual harassment, employee safety, welfare, wellness and health).
  • Managing employee relations, including disputes, grievances, and termination interviews.
  • Developing and documenting policy.
  • Distributing and reviewing job performance evaluations on an annual basis.
  • Conducting organizational review and space planning.
  • And more.
On the whole you will find that our staff is self-sufficient, but we'll look to you to maintain an open door policy.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring a strong and enthusiastic commitment to our mission, and an upbeat and service-oriented approach to supporting your clients. You also will need the ability to lead lasting change, helping our people embrace new ways of doing things. "Multitasking" is almost a cliche in job postings, but in this role it is crucial. While you'll take over changes that are already underway, we'll also look for you to identify opportunities to improve.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
